As we are reminded everyday, when it comes to online communication, no one can guarantee your complete privacy. Banks, health insurance companies and even the United States Department of Defense have suffered intrusions to their systems. Stolen personal information cannot be retrieved like when money is stolen electronically. Unlike money, once information is stolen or published on the internet, it is impossible to retrieve. Confidentiality online cannot be guaranteed. While the probability for email theft may be relatively low given the sheer number of messages now crossing the internet, confidentiality within the laws that govern psychotherapy is not absolute. The risks can be substantially minimized but not eliminated.
